Rattle - Bentwood Box
The baby bentwood rattles are hand-carved by Squamish artist, Peter Wayne Gong. They are made of cedar and are built like a bentwood box; each one is unique.
Bentwood boxes were made to hold history, store regalia, and other treasured items. These boxes of treasure help preserve ancestor's legacies. Traditional boxes are steamed and bent red cedar.
Some rattles or shakers are an instrument that is used in the sweat lodge and healing ceremonies, community songs or a moment of reflection and connection on a walkabout or journey. These ones are built with little hands in mind and are the perfect size for babies or toddlers.

Peter started to carve when he was a teenager. He learned from his Uncle, Jack Miranda. He was taught how to carve ivory and wood, and also learned how to make his own tools. Now Peter carves mostly red and yellow cedar as well as alder and birch. Recently Peter has made more progress in his art with the teachings from Sean Hinton and Tom Patterson.
