These smaller plaques are hand-carved and painted by Port Hardy, Kwakwaka’wakw artist, Joe Johnny. It has a cord loop on the back for easy wall hanging.

Bear symbolizes power, strength, healing, thoughtfulness, and willpower.

Wolf is the protector and teacher. Wolves represent strong family ties.

Thunderbird is a mythical creature, considered to be the most powerful of all spirits. The powers of Thunderbird come from the curved appendages on their head.

Joe Johnny started carving in 1977. He learned from his uncle Charlie G. Walkus, as well as other carvers from Victoria to Alert Bay. He now carves with his son, Morris Johnny in Port Hardy, BC.
