The Crooked Beak plaque was hand-carved and painted by Kwakwaka'wakw artist, Joe Johnny.

Crooked Beak, sometimes called "The Crooked Beak of Heaven", symbolizes one of the supernatural bird associates of Baxwbakwalanukwisw', a cannibal spirit.

Joe Johnny started carving in 1977. He learned from his uncle Charlie G. Walkus, as well as other carvers from Victoria to Alert Bay. He now carves with his son, Morris Johnny in Port Hardy, BC.
