I was born in Alert Bay B.C., on Cormorant Island. I am a member of the Nimpkish Band and was primarily raised by my grandparents. At an early age, I was provided with plenty of positive encouragement and constructive criticism in either drawing with paper and pencil and learning proper implementation of designs, history, stories, legends and art forms. In order to gain further knowledge and appreciation of the Kwakiutl art form, I studied under the supervision of the present day master Kwakiutl artist, such as Tony Hunt Sr., Doug Cranmer, and Oscar Matilpi. I have also studied the 'rules' to fully understand the discipline of contemporary Kwakiutl art and have become to appreciate this particular style of work. I have learned the basic techniques of carving wood as well as the three dimensional shaping. I have also taken a Fine Arts course at Malaspina College, to further enhance my understanding of the principles of the composition and development of art in general.Products By Harold Alfred
