Mask - Sea Monster

This spectacular Sea Monster mask is hand carved by Kwakwaka'wakw First Nation artist Leonard Scow. This piece is hand carved from red Cedar and hand painted with acrylic paints. Adorn on the sides of the mask is red Cedar strips and crafting feathers.

Sea Monsters capable of arouing storms, waves, and dangerous whirlpools and danced as part of the Winter Ceremony. His dance is characterized by movements, which initiate a Sea Mammal sounding, then surfacing and breathing.
