2ft Paddle - Thunderbird
Artist: Ross Henderson
Kwakwaka'wakw First Nation artist Ross Henderson hand carved and painted this powerful 2ft Thunderbird paddle from red cedar.
The traditional carved paddles are used by many West Coast Natives to steer and paddle the large cedar canoes in the coastal waters of the Northwest Pacific. Native Paddles are also used during ceremonial dances.
The Thunderbird is a mythical creature considered to be the most powerful of all spirits. The powers come from the curved appendages on their heads.
