Woven Abalone Shell - Whale & Sea Bird
The weavers of the Nuu-chah-nulth Nation produce some of the finest and most delicately woven pieces from split cedar bark and swamp grass. The bark and grasses are harvested, soaked and split to create baskets, hats, trays and more.
This weaving is done around an abalone shell. The images woven are a whale and a seabird. These designs are family designs that have been passed down for Christina to use while weaving.
The grass is dyed in a variety of colours then woven in to make designs.
