Talking Stick - Raven & Beaver

Artist: Jim Yelton

Squamish First Nation artist Jim Yelton hand carved this beautiful cedar talking stick.

The Talking stick, used in many Indigenous cultures, is an ancient and powerful “communication tool” that ensures a code of conduct of respect during meetings is followed. The person holding the stick, and only that person, is designated as having the right to speak and all others must listen quietly and respectfully.

The raven is a creature whose curiosity often gets the best of them. Raven is responsible for putting the sun, moon and stars into the sky. Also symbols of prestige and knowledge.

The Beaver helps people understand the dynamics of teamwork and to appreciate each individual’s talents and contributions in order to accomplish anything.
