Talking Stick - Eagle & Bukwus

Artist: Jim Yelton

Squamish First Nation artist Jim Yelton hand carved this beautiful cedar talking stick.

The Talking stick, used in many Indigenous cultures, is an ancient and powerful “communication tool” that ensures a code of conduct of respect during meetings is followed. The person holding the stick, and only that person, is designated as having the right to speak and all others must listen quietly and respectfully.

Eagle is a symbol of peace and friendship. They are loyal animals full of lasting lover and dedication.

Bukwus is the wild man of the woods. He is a shy little man whose favorite food is cockles. He is from the supernatural ghostly world. Bookwus will try to lure you to eat his food and when you do you become his slave.
