Framed Art Card - Journey (Feather)
I can still picture it: in the summer of 1997 I dipped a paddle into the water for the first time. I clearly remember looking down and seeing little spirals filling the void left by its movement. I could also feel its power as it caused the canoe to surge forward. I remember the journey from Comox down to Victoria: seeing myself in a mirror in Nanaimo unable to recognize the darkened figure before me. I recall the aching arms and the pangs of hunger. I also recollect the joy and the laughter and the first strained pitches of becoming a traditional singer. We like to say that it’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey. This is certainly true....
That same summer I lost my grandmother. It was at once a pained experience and one filled with joy. I was privileged to witness her end her journey here on earth and enter another journey home. It was a useful lesson to remember once again that it wasn’t just about where she was going, but her journey in getting there....
Later on in 1997, while procrastinating completing my master’s degree, I began a journey on which I still travel to this day when I created my first limited edition print, I-Hos-K’hin. Little did I know that over 100 prints later I’d still be on the same journey and enjoying every step along the way. I’ve learned a lot over the years and continue on--not thinking about where I’m going but about how I’m getting there.... I offer up this print to celebrate the Journey!
