Cod Mask

This incredible Cod mask is hand carved and painted by Kwagiulth First Nation artist Charlie Johnson. This mask is carved from red cedar and is adorn with cedar bark bundles.

Codfish are an important food item for Coastal First Nation people. Some will tell the story that lunar eclipse is the result of a cod trying to swallow the moon. Some First Nation fishermen make a special offering of the first cod they catch each season, similar to how it is done for salmon and halibut. Codfish is used as a clan crest in some areas and can be found quite often carved as masks.
